How Brushing Your Teeth Can Help You Lose Weight

It might sound almost unbelievable that simply brushing your teeth can contribute to your losing weight, but there is some strong evidence to suggest that this is the case. Of course, it does not so much depend upon how you do it, where you do it or even the brand of toothpaste that you use. In fact brushing your teeth can contribute to your maintaining a healthy body weight and going some way to helping to prevent you getting overweight as long as you do it at a certain time of the day.

Now I can see that last statement may have the critical side of your intelligence rising to have you heading for the “get me out of here” button because it sounds too ridiculous to be true. But read on and you will soon see the psychology behind this simple yet almost unbelievably effective strategy.

As one of the great tips to lose weight or to prevent weight gain, this will all make a lot of sense, because one of the worst things that you can do to your waistline is to eat high calorie snacks late at night or just before going to bed. Think about the times that you felt the temptation to raid the fridge just before heading off to bed and tucking into a large slice of calorie laden pie, or a big cheese sandwich, or a half packet of cookies and a glass of milk, or something equally loaded with calories. You eat it all and then go brush your teeth and then go to bed.

Your body does a terrible job of digesting food while you sleep, so most of what you eat late at night ends up being distributed around your waist or backside as fat! But if you were to brush your teeth an hour before you went to bed, the chances of you wanting to eat something are much lower. That’s because there is a psychological barrier to eating once you have brushed your teeth. You have been conditioned to do this after eating and not before, so the act of brushing your teeth is sending signals to your brain that you are not going to eat anything else for a while. That’s enough time to go to sleep without eating that high calorie late night snack and your waistline will thank you for it!
