It’s the start of a New Year, and so I am predictably scribbling down some New Year’s resolutions. The one I would really like to stick to this year is to become more of a morning person.
I am stuck in this bad cycle of getting up late, being cranky with the kids, and running out of time to do any chores before I take them to school. This means I have to do all the cooking and housework, after me and the kids get home in the evening. I often don’t get finished until late, so I am late to bed, so late to rise in the morning, and so the cycle continues.
I am sure if I could just get on top of things in the morning, then the rest of the day would be far less stressful. So here’s my action plan to help me achieve my goal:
1. Get up when the alarm clock goes off.
My current alarm is a real push over – it’s far too easy to ignore. So I am going to invest in an alarm clock for heavy sleepers, that will get me out of bed at the right time.
2. Wake Up Yoga
Before I do anything else, I am going to take 10 minutes out to do this morning Yoga routine to help me feel awake and energized:
3. Cut right back on my coffee.
My early morning coffee, and the one I drink when I first get to work will be the only two I have all day. I can’t cut it out completely (not because I’m addicted, but because my garden needs the old coffee grounds), so cutting back is the next best thing, and will help me achieve a better night’s sleep.
4. Diet overhaul
Besides the caffeine, I think the amount of sugar in my diet is probably interfering with the quality of my sleep, and since I need to shed a few Holiday-pounds, a change of diet makes a lot of sense.
Now I have my goal, and my action plan for reaching it, the next thing I need to do is monitor progress, so I am going to start keeping a note of what time I am ready to start the day, how I feel, and how that affects the rest of the day. My prediction is that I can be a confirmed ‘morning person’ by Easter.
